BSU is the only Belarusian University that features among the world's elite institutions in this year's QS World University Rankings by Subject. On Feb. 27, the British company Quacquarelli Symonds published its 2019 QS World University Rankings by 48 Subjects. Belarusian State University placed among the top 600 universities (No. 551-600) for Physics and Astronomy rankings of 30,000 ongoing universities.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject and are one of the most widely read rankings. The QS World University Rankings by Subject has been published for the seventh time and is widely regarded as one of the most influential global university rankings. It rates institutions based on four criteria: opinions of more than 83,000 academic experts and 42,000 employers, citation index for the last five years and Hirsch index, which reflects a researcher’s contribution to science. At the same time, the methodology does not take into account publications prepared by large collaborations, to which BSU is a party. Despite this condition, Belarusian State University advanced in the list of exclusive universities in the world for Physics.

As to neighboring countries, 17 Russian universities are in Rankings by Subject for Physics and Astronomy. Lomonosov Moscow State University is on the 26 th place, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research Nuclear University “MIPhI”, Novosibirsk State University etc. placed in the group No.51-100. Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev (No. 401-450), V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (No. 551-600), Vilnius University (No. 251-300), University of Warsaw (No. 151-200), the Jagiellonian University and Warsaw University of Technology (No. 251-300), AGH University of Science and Technology (No. 401-500), Wrocław University of Science and Technology (No. 451-500), University of Wrocław (No. 501-550) are also listed in the QS Rankings.

It should be reminded that BSU was ranged for Physics and Astronomy in 2017 only. At the moment BSU is ranked 354 th in the QS World University Rankings, and according to EECA University Rankings BSU holds 4 th place.

It should be noted that there are more than 20 various university rankings. BSU participates in the 11 of them, including the Big Three: Shanghai Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings and QS Rankings. According to these agencies’ data, BSU consistently ranks with 2 % of the best universities in the world.
