Students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics will take part in the Abel Prize award ceremony. The event is to take place on May 21 in the Aula of the University of Oslo (Norway). The honor to participate in such event is accorded to Peter Ignatenko and Konstantin Shinkarev for winning the International Tournament for Young Mathematicians ITYM-2018. The delegation also includes the Head of the Team a 4th year student Anton Voronko and the Assistant Professor of the Department of Higher Mathematics Yaroslav Zadvorny.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2019 to Karen Kesulla Uhlenbeck for her pioneering achievements in geometric partial differential equations, gauge theory and integrable systems, and for the fundamental impact of her work on analysis, geometry and mathematical physics. Ms Uhlenbeck became the first woman to win the Abel Prize.

During the event, students will witness the presentation of the Honorary Award by King of Norway Harald V, will meet with outstanding mathematicians, and attend lectures on current challenges and development of Mathematics.

It should be noted that Belarusian teams perform successfully in the International Tournament for Young Mathematicians. For the last 10 years participants from Belarus have won six gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

The Abel Prize was established by the Norwegian government in 2002 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Niels Henrik Abel's birth. The Abel Prize recognizes contributions to the field of mathematics that are of extraordinary depth and influence. Anyone may submit a nomination for the Abel Prize; however, self-nominations are not permitted. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters declares the winner of the Abel Prize each March after recommendation by the Abel Committee, which consists of five leading mathematicians. Nowadays the scientists from Israel, Norway, France and the USA serve on the Committee.
