Member of the House of Lords of the Parliament of Great Britain Baroness Suttie visited the BSU. A meeting was held with BSU Rector Andrei Karol, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Internationalization of Education Konstantin Kozadaev, Dean of the Faculty of International Relations Viсtor Shadursky, Head of the Department of International Relations Alexander Zhuk, and coordinator of international COMPASS project in Belarus Arsen Nazarenko.

The main topic of the talks was the discussion of the potential of the Belarusian State University as a center for learning the Russian language. The Baroness stressed that many British students would like to learn Russian and, moreover, have the opportunity to receive Russian-language education, however, such an opportunity is presented only in Russia. In turn, the Belarusian colleagues noted that the BSU has many years of experience and a high academic level in the field of teaching Russian as a foreign language. A large number of short-term and long-term educational programs and courses have also been created at the BSU. This allows to organize language internships for students studying Russian language and literature and wishing to improve their communication skills directly in the linguistic environment.

It should be noted that Baroness Suttie’s visit to the BSU is taking place within the framework of the international project COMPASS (Comprehensive Capacity-Building in Eastern Neighbourhood and Central Asia: research integration, impact governance and sustainable communities). The international initiative involves joint research and exchange of experience in the field of education, effective management in the development of IT technologies, migration processes and regional security. Within a few days, the Baroness Suttie will give a lecture on the Brexit and New Challenges of Global Politics at the Faculty of International Relations and conduct a training session on British parliamentary debates. In addition, a visit to the Faculty of History of the BSU is planned.
