Candidate of Jurisprudence (1979), senior researcher (1985), sociology department associate professor (1991). Sociologist, jurist. Specialist at family sociology, methodology and methods of sociological researches.

She was born on July 7th, 1945 in Rossony (Vetebsk region). After graduating from the Department of Law of the Belarusian State University in 1972, she had been working at Problem laboratory of sociological research of BSU as a junior researcher, research worker and senior researcher, and then she became a head of a department of soviet family problems.

She defended a candidate's thesis on issue of "Legal Termination of a Marriage" in 1979 and published a monograph "Sociology and Justice about Divorce" even before the defense of a thesis (Minsk, BSU. 1979).

She's been working as sociology department associated professor since 1991. In 2008 she was given the academic title of associated professor at "Sociology". She is a high achiever of the Republic of Belarus Education (2010).

Svetlana N. Burova is a jurist by training and a sociologist by vocation. Her scientific effort and educational work are closely associated with sociology. The main scientific interest are: sociology of marriage and family, gender sociology, methodology of applied sociology surveys. She was a scientific adviser and a senior executive of several all-union sociological projects within the framework of program "Public Opinion" carried on by the State Education Committee of USSR (1990-1991). She was also one of the constitutors, a chief executive and scientific adviser of a number of sociological service "Public opinion" research projects (Minsk) from 1991 to 1996. She took part in organization of "Belarusian Young Women Christian Association" - the part of the World Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), which has a consultative status in the UNO and the Council of Europe. Svetlana Burova was a president of this organization in 1996, a general secretary from 1997 to 2005, and she's been working as an international coordinator of the non-governmental organization "Belarusian Young Women Christian Association" since 2006.

Many of important Belarusian and international research projects were fulfilled under the direction of Svetlana Burova. She's been coordinating the project "Violence against women as a social problem" (UNIFEM - YWCA of Belarus) from 1997 to 1999. She also worked as a national coordinator of several Belarus-Swedish projects: "Violence Against Women Prevention", "Young Women's Leadership Development", "Responsible Parenthood: Gender Approach", "Youth Development" and etc (1996 - 2009). She coordinated the project "Violence against young women as a social problem" under the treaty between the Belarusian Fund of Fundamental research and BSU and from 2002 to 2003 she was coordinating an international sociological survey under the problems of domestic violence in the nine countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States within the framework of Regional Information Campaign in defense of women rights to life without violence, carried out by UNIFEM. She also was coordinating such projects as "The Young Family in XXI century" from 2002 to 2003 (under the association agreement between BSU and MSUCE) and "Gender Aspects of Violence among Refugees on the Territory of Belarus" from 2008 to 2009 (a treaty between the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and YWCA of Belarus).

Svetlana Burova actively works on family issues and women's rights on the national and international level. She's been actively taking part at drawing up the national UNDP Report on the women status in the Republic of Belarus - "Belarusian Women as seen Through an Era" from 1996 to 1997. She is a member of International Society of Family Law since 1999 and member of the National Gender policy Council under the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus since 2002. She participated in the compilation of a report about the accomplishment by the Government of Republic of Belarus the UN Convention 1979 "On the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women" with a subsequent speech at the CEDAW Committee session in New-York in 2003.

On July, 2007 Svetlana Burova was honoured with the Honoring Women Leader title for her valuable contribution to the International Women's Movement at World YWCA Council in Kenya.

She is an author of more than 100 works, scientific editor and joint author of two collective monographs on family and youth issues, parts of teaching aids for university students on methodology and methods of sociological researches, encyclopaedic publications "The Young Family" and "Modern Sexology". She published her works in England, Holland and China. Some of the publications are of a purely applied character, for example a booklet "Domestic Violence: the Problem and Ways of Solution" (2008) was published specially for the National Council of the Republic of Belarus deputies with the purpose of actualization the solution of domestic violence problem with the legal means. The Booklet was highly appreciated by the representatives of the major legislative body of the country.
