Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics


The Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics is one of the main Departments at the Belarusian State University. Since the foundation of the Belarusian State University in 1921, it remained a branch of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In October of 1958, it divided in two faculties: the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Mathematics. In 1970, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics was created on the foundation of the Faculty of Mathematics, and in 1975, it was renamed as the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics.

 Staff:    32 Professors and Doctors of Sciences, 65 Associate Professors and Senior Lectures, 26 Associate Professors and over 1 200 Students.

 Faculty offers programs of study leading to the Diploma of Higher Education, Master Degree, PhD Degree.

Specialty «Mechanics» is a unique combination of fundamental knowledge in the sphere of mechanics, strong mathematical education and highprofessional skills at programming. Graduators of speciality «Mechanics» have wide profession choice to work: at higher education institutes at mechanics and applied mathematics oriented departments; at scientific research  institutes departments, related to study of the stability and reliability of machines and mechanisms; at engineering and design organizations; at institutions and organizations associated with the modeling (mathematical and computer) of a variety of mechanical processes, phenomena and mechanisms.

The system analyst is a specialist who is able to qualitatively formalize and quantitatively interpretate the processes and phenomena, using various methods and ways for evaluating the model formed. He can look at the problem from different sides and see the whole process as a single unit. The analyst is able to assess the strengths and weaknesses, calculate all possible risks and losses, and also make an informed forecast for the further state of the problem. BSU and Magdeburg University of Otto-von-Guericke carry out a co-operative training of undergraduates, within this trainings students have the opportunity to study in Germany for 5 months at the expense of the host country.
